Big Secret
âPaloma,â the voice called once more. Smaller this time. Farther away.
âItâs the middle of the night,â I said in my groggy half-asleep stupor. âCanât this wait until the morning?â
âItâs important.â The voice wavered with a gravelly tremor. It sounded like it belonged to an older man.
Maybe it wasnât a ghost, I reassured myself. This could be one of those lucid dreams that Aunt Maria was always talking about. I was sure there had to be a very reasonable explanation for all of this.
There was only one way to find out, so I rolled off my cot and made my way through the maze of sleeping girls. I slid my feet carefully across the rough carpeting to feel where I was going, making adjustments every time I bumped into something. I searched for the door frame with my arms outstretched in front of my face as I made my way closer toward the sound.
âPlease donât be a ghost, please let me be imagining things, please donât be a ghost,â I muttered to myself in the hopes that if I said it enough times, it might actually be true. I had a sinking feeling that this had something to do with me using the Ouija board.
Once I was fully out of the room, I turned on my phoneâs flashlight to see better. Two cold sunken eyes stared back at me, set in a pale translucent face. There was no mistaking that this was a ghost. And not just any ghost, it was Willowâs grandfather from earlier today. His deep wrinkles outlined his expression which was cast in a frown. I was surprised he had the energy to cross over twice in one day. Unless... Oh no, unless he never left after the reading. What if that meant none of the other spirits left too?
This was a problem. Without my candles, I had no way of sending him back. So much for my wishful thinking that all of the ghosts would just cross back over on their own. Iâd never closed the portal to the spirit world without candles before and Iâd never seen Abuela do it either. This was a disaster. I never should have used the Ouija board.
Before this moment, I could confidently say that ghosts didnât scare me, but seeing Willowâs grandpa in the middle of the night made my skin crawl.
âWhat are you still doing here?â I watched my breath leave my mouth. It was a lot colder than usual. I rubbed my arms to try and warm myself up. Willowâs grandpa must be pretty powerful!
âI need to tell Willow something urgently,â he said. âAnd I know youâre the only one who can help me do that.â
âIf youâd like, we could do a reading tomorrow and you can talk to her then,â I suggested. Why does it have to be now?
âTime is of the essence,â he demanded.
âIâm not going to wake her up.â I pointed to the window to prove to the ghost that it was still dark out.
